January 2nd 2008-

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

I hope everyone has had an amazing 2007, and that 2008 will bring nothing but good things!

It's been a while since i've updated... Nothing to urgent has been happening. The girls and I have been doing some fundraising (selling chocolate bars, and other typical fundraising endeavours) and we've been doing amazingly well. However the fundraising we have been doing only goes towards our vaccinations and our flights, and once those are paid for the rest of the fundraising money goes towards the Douglas College Endownment Fund. We set a goal of raising $30,000 (i believe) and we are just about there! We have a few more fundraisers planned for the new year (promise to keep you updated!), and chocolate bars are continuing to sell and are a big hit!So now were faced with preparing for the actual trip. only 3 months away :S now's the time for us to see just how long 3 months is, since that's how long we'll be away for. So the nerves have begun and the questioning myself has also found it's way into my head as well. Little things like "HOW THE HELL AM I GOING TO FIT 3 MONTHS OF MY LIFE INTO 2 SUITCASES!" have been interesting... yet not as big of a dilemma as i would have previously expected it to be. When i think about it, that is clearly going to be difficult for me because not only do i have a lot of personal belongings i'd like to have with me, i also have hundreds of things i'd like to bring to incorporate in the centre i'm developing, such as: books, puzzles, teacher resources etc. So its' going to be very difficult to find enough space for everything i'd like to bring. It's not reccommended to mail things to the city I will be living in, the postal service is unreliable, and anything you send, if it does manage to get to it's destination takes so long, it may not even be worth the trouble. So I likely won't recieve any packages from home, containing 'home things' like, peanut butter, Kraft dinner, or anything else mail-able, that i take for granted each day, until the moment i don't have them at my disposal! :( These are the types of things i'm worried about at this point, haha. clearly superficial things, that probably will not affect me as much as i expect once i arrive and start working. On the other hand there is worries about relationships, with friends and family. Three months, is a long time to be away. And although I will be accessible by cell phone, and email, I can't imagine I'll be able to keep in touch with everyone on a regular basis. I will do my best to keep weekly journals online, for friends and family to see, and respond to anyone and everyone, but again in the area i am travelling too, electricity is also unreliable so finding the chance to go into town and hope that the internet cafe stays with power long enough to get through some of that, will be challenging and i can imagine, frustrating.

I'll clearly be doing alot of adapting and adjusting over my time there. But I feel like I'm ready for it. I'm ready to get out of here and do something amazing for a while. See things I've never seen before, do things I've never done, go places I've never gone...And hopefully it's not the only chance I get for something like this in my life, but I want to make sure that I treat it as if it is. Make sure that as hard as it may be somedays, and no matter how much i want to come home, that I remember why I'm there, who I'm helping and what I'm learning.

Who knows, I may be worried about nothing, three months will probably fly by and i may not want to leave when the plane comes to Intebe to pick me up and take me to Europe. I may decide to spend the rest of my life there, and only come back for holidays... who knows really... ;-)

I love all of you and thank you so much to everyone who has been so supportive and amazzzzzzing! Everyone has helped me in their own ways whether it be through encouragment, donations, spreading the word and getting support from other people.... everything. Knowing that people are standing behind me on this, makes it a lot easier! xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox

October 15th 2007 -

The night at Mirage was a success!! Made $450! Which is awesome! Lots of people came out and it was great to see everyone! And I climbed the grouse grind the next morning for my first time with $150 in pledges under my belt with a time of an hour and a half (not to bad considering the late night, and that it was my first time ;-))

So we're doing VERY well! This friday is the "Hello from Africa" presentation and that should be amazing.

Not much else planned yet, (except for Chocolate bars in november and ongoing sales of Project Uganda 2008 wristbands for $2.00) but i will keep everyone updated on everything!!

October 6th 2007 -
Happy Long Weekend EVERYONE!

So I'm happy to 'announce' that I was accepted in to the Uganda Project 2008 at Douglas college. I will be travelling to Uganda on April 19th 2008 with 4 other girls from the Community Social Service Worker (CSSW) Program at Douglas. This is project they have been doing for a few years, sending CSSW's to Uganda where they work with organizations: HIV/AIDS relief, Masaka Referral Hospital, Uganda Schizophrenia Fellowship, Uganda Society for Disabled Children and Primary and Secondary schools. Students are placed at one of these organizations to practice the skills they've learned in their program as well as complete their program practicum. This year the Uganda Project wanted to add an Early Childhood Educator to the project because they are finding numerous areas where one would be of great assistance. One of the opportunities they hope to accomplishi with this years project is setting up a childcare facility in the Masaka Hostpital. And in order to do so they hoped for the assistance of an ECE and they got ME! It's one of the many options of projects I could be working on while in Uganda, but I strongly believe it would be one of the most rewarding and amazing experiences. Not even having graduated, working on my Special Needs practicum, and opening a centre. It's unheard of. I am so proud to be a part of this and the other girls are amazing. They've been fundraising for a few weeks now so i'm just working on getting caught up on all the things that are going on.
One of the events they have planned that i'm extremely excited about is the "Hello From Africa" Presentation. It is on October 19th, at 7:00pm at the Douglas College Performing Arts Theatre. At this event there will be a showing of Stephen Lewis' new film "Women: The Face of AIDS" as well as special guest presentations from African grandmothers raising AIDS orphans and past Douglas college CSSW students who have been a part of the Uganda Project. Admission for this event is by donation but tickets must be reserved (as these events always sell out, Stephen lewis has support the Uganda project in previous years) by calling 604-939-5216 or 604-527-5484.
There will also be more pub nights, chocolate bar sales, wrist band sales, and even t-shirts over the next few weeks and months, so i will be sure to keep everyone posted. Sorry for the delayed update but as you can imagine, school is extremely busy as it is at this time (in my second year, approaching my second practicum) and this new endeavour has added a little more to my plate by having to do all new research on a whole new country. Eeek...
If you want to ask me any questions or have anything you'd like to share with me please email me anytime!!!! Katiekump@hotmail.com
Thanks again for all of your love and support!!!! xoxoxoxoxoxoxox
P.S. I almost forgot, next saturday I will be climbing the Grouse Grind for Uganda and will be accepting pledges for that (remember its the night after my mirage fundraiser :-S) so if you wish to pledge you can contact me or my mom, who has kindly taken control of that for me :-)

September 19th 2007 -

Hey everyone, So just an update looks like my Africa trip might change a bit...my school has now approached me about going with their foundation as an Early Childhood Educator. They are hoping to send one student in april for 10 weeks to help set up a childcare centre in Kampala, Uganda. The centre would be based in a hostpital in a very poor area where many children spend their days with family members who are ill. This is obviously another amazing opportunity and I jumped at it. I'm going through the application process right now, as there were a few other girls who were interested, so I will let you know how that goes! Either way I will still be going to Africa to Volunteer and will still be fundraising to pay for the costs, but this will just change the country- xoxoxox

August 17th 2007 - UPDATE

Our first fundraising event has been planned...
October 12th (far away i know...so there should be no excuses ;))
@ Mirage Nightclub
$10/ticket - free cover, one free drink and NO LINE....plus an extremely appreciated donation to my trip! :D Let me know if you'd like to join us and I will send some tickets your way! :)

Hi Everyone,

I will be travelling to Zambia a country in the south-central area of Africa in May 2008. I will be volunteering with an organization called Volunteer Adventures. I will spend my time working with children in a local school as well as an orphanage which houses children who have lost their parents to the HIV/AIDS pandemic and would other wise live on the streets.

I am extrememly excited to travel to Africa and help out. I have always had a passion for helping and working with children, and in recent years have developed a strong yearning for travel. What better way to see the world than this?

However, despite how amazing this experience will be it is quite expensive. So i will be planning a number of fundraisers as well as accepting monetary donations (see Donations link to the left) over the next several months... please come back to this site often for updates on events and I will also try and let everyone know (via email or word of mouth) when an event has been planned!!

All your love and support is extremely appreciated and is making this adventure less nerve racking! ;) :)
